What changed this week

  • San Francisco will test Mike Evans before kickoff. Rib and Achilles problems kept him off the practice field every day, which had not happened before this season.
  • The 49ers receiver room is thin. No Deebo Samuel tonight, and Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Aiyuk are on IR. That leaves extra targets for Brandin Cooks, especially if Evans is limited.
  • Stefon Diggs (hamstring) carries a questionable tag, and Washington has its bye next week. If he sits, Antonio Williams handles the slot.
  • No Croskey-Merritt for Washington, so Rachaad White leads the Washington backfield and Austin Ekeler takes passing downs.
  • Nick Bosa misses another game, which takes some heat off Jayden Daniels.

Our read

San Francisco is 5-0 and favored by more than a touchdown, and the public is piling onto the 49ers. We think Washington keeps this closer than the spread says. Daniels can move the ball with his legs, and Washington's pass defense has been easy to throw on, so both offenses should score. Washington has been stingy against running backs, which is why we are lighter than the field on McCaffrey.

What wins a high-scoring close game

We study the winning lineup from every DraftKings NFL showdown. A one-score game with a total in the 50s lands in our high-scoring close bucket. Here is what those winners had in common.

Captain positionWR 36% · QB 26% · RB 21% · TE 17%. No other game type has more tight end captains.
Captain's team57% from the winner. Barely better than half, so a Washington captain is fine even if San Francisco wins.
QuarterbacksBoth QBs 54% · one QB 40%. Daniels and Purdy together is the most common shape.
Team split3-3 in 56%. 4-2 toward the winner 21%, 4-2 toward the loser 17%. 5-1 almost never wins.
Kicker and defenseA kicker in 39% and a defense in 8%. Skip the defenses.
SalaryMiddle half spent $49,000 to $49,900.

Roster construction, in order

3-3  ›  4-2 49ers  ›  4-2 Commanders

Counts are 49ers-Commanders. In a game we expect to stay close, the even split wins most often.

Captain board

Salary is the captain price. Proj and ceiling are our FLEX numbers; multiply by 1.5 for the captain slot.

1. Jayden Daniels (WAS QB) · $15,000 · 18.9 proj, 30.9 ceiling
Our captain. If Washington keeps it close, his rushing is the reason. He went over 100 on the ground last time out. The field is putting far more of its captains on Purdy and McCaffrey. About 13% captain ownership.
2. George Kittle (SF TE) · $12,300 · 15.4 proj, 29.3 ceiling
Few defenses have let tight ends score as often as Washington's, and Kittle played nearly every snap last week with the receivers banged up. The best way to captain the 49ers without following the crowd. About 11% captain ownership.
3. Brock Purdy (SF QB) · $16,200 · 22.9 proj, 35.8 ceiling
The most popular captain tonight. He has been sharp against this kind of defense, and he is fine there. Just know that a fifth of the field agrees. About 20% captain ownership.
4. Rachaad White (WAS RB) · $9,900 · 12.0 proj, 23.8 ceiling
The lead back in a game we think stays close, at a captain price under $10,000. San Francisco gives up a lot of catches to running backs too. About 6% captain ownership.
5. Brandin Cooks (SF WR) · $6,000 · 4.9 proj, 13.2 ceiling
A $6,000 captain who becomes the No. 2 receiver if Evans is limited or out. Only worth it if Evans is ruled out or clearly limited. About 1% captain ownership.

Player board (FLEX salaries)

Orange number is our FLEX projection, then projected ownership.

Core

QB WAS Jayden Daniels · $10,000 · 18.9 · 51%In most of our lineups. Rushing yards give him a floor neither receiver room can match.
TE SF George Kittle · $8,200 · 15.4 · 37%Play him in the FLEX if he is not your captain. Washington's weakness is the middle of the field.
QB SF Brock Purdy · $10,800 · 22.9 · 58%Both quarterbacks show up in more than half of high-scoring close winners. Pair him with Daniels.
RB WAS Rachaad White · $6,600 · 12.0 · 34%Lead back with Croskey-Merritt out, and the betting market has moved his rushing line way up this week.

Value

WR SF Brandin Cooks · $4,000 · 4.9 · 13%The cheap 49ers receiver to own. His role grows with every receiver who sits.
RB WAS Austin Ekeler · $3,600 · 6.0 · 12%Passing-down back at $3,600, and no defense lets running backs catch more passes than San Francisco.
WR WAS Antonio Williams · $4,200 · 5.5 · 13%Only if Diggs sits. He ran most of his routes from the slot last week.
WR WAS Stefon Diggs · $8,400 · 9.2 · 19%If he plays, he will be lightly owned for a receiver with his track record. A hamstring and a bye next week make a limited role possible.

Fades

RB SF Christian McCaffrey · $11,800 · 22.8 · 53%The best player on the field, but backs have scored less against Washington than against almost any other defense, and San Francisco has kept his carries down. Over half the field has him in the FLEX. We will be under that.
DST 49ers · $4,400 · 7.6 · 18%Defenses rarely win high-scoring close games, and San Francisco is without Nick Bosa again.

GPP Core

Captain Jayden Daniels with George Kittle and Brock Purdy: the quarterback we think keeps Washington in it, the tight end facing the defense he should feast on, and the other quarterback. $34,000 for the three.

Finish it yourself. Build a 3-3: add a Commander (White, Ekeler or McLaurin) and a cheap 49er (Cooks). Land between $49,000 and $49,900 in salary.

Contrarian to the field: the 49ers defense takes over. Purdy and Daniels are the two most popular players tonight, and most lineups will have both. If you think San Francisco runs away with it, skip both quarterbacks. Captain Kittle, add the 49ers defense and McCaffrey, then finish with a kicker and one or two Commanders who pile up yards late. Defenses show up in more winners when one team pulls away, and without the two quarterbacks your lineup looks nothing like the field's.
